explanation: The oldest existent fairly tale, written in the early Heian period by an unknown man. It tells the history of a baby found inside a bamboo trunk. As she grows older, she has become so beautiful to be called Kaguyahime (shining princess). Many aristocrats of Kyoto wanted to get married with her but each time she avoided the proposal by demanding an object impossible to get. One day, she confessed to be originated from the moon and had gone up to the heaven.

explanation: Collection of short novels written by Minamoto no Takakuni at the end of Heian period from the popular oral tales of that epoch. It contains more than 1000 tales divided onto 31 volumes and covers the histories of Japan, China and India (mostly Buddhist sources for the latter). Being of excellent literature, many modern writers have inspired from it like Rashomon of Akutagawa Ryunosuke, adapted to a movie by Kurosawa Akira.

A boy born from this peach has been sent, accompanied by a monkey, a pheasant and a dog, to beat demons who live in a neighboring island.

explanation: A legendary figure of Heian period and one of 4 followers (Shitenno) of Minamoto no Yorimitsu who killed a famous bandit, Shutendoji of Mt Oeyama. According to Konjaku monogatari he would be raised by a yamauba (mountain witch) and trained his force with bears at Mt Ashigara near Hakone. During Edo period, he appeared in Joruri and Kabuki plays as a red boy with an ax and a stomach cover. His doll is also set during the boy's festival (Tango no sekku) in May.

Suddenly she transformed herself to a court lady and brought him to the sea palace. After months of stay, he wanted to return back to home. So she gave him a decorated box as gift but banned to open it. When he returned back to home, nobody recognized him. When he opened the box, he was caught by the time of 300 years and had died.
