Hello I am a Dramaturg for a production of the play "Top Girls" by Caryl Churchill, and in it there is a scene where the lead character is with Lady Nijo from 13th Century Japan. I was wondering if anyone knows how a woman from this period would greet another woman in the physical sense. I do not need a vocal greeting, rather just what they would do physically, an example being bow or shake hands. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If it helps Lady Nijo is a courtesan turn Buddist (sp?) nun. Thanks~ |

Dear Madam, Excepting for the very ancient period like Himiko's period (3th AD) when people had clapped to salute, Japanese has always bowed to salute and not shakehand nor embrace. You have to bow lengthily and profoundly before a high ranked person. Best regards, |
