Hi i'm a interior design student from singapore. Currently participating in a furniture design competition regarding the theme NEW ASIA. I am really keen to know if the new generation in Japan are losing their tradition of wearing kimonos? and why? is it because of the lack of knowledge or plainly because they just dread it??
please help!! i'm stuck! thanks |

Hello.i'm from Japan.i'm 19 years old.
let me explain.
of course, even now ,some people wear kimono in their daily life without regard to age,because they like kimono.or some people wear it because of their job;at some japanese restaurant,at some tourist attraction,traditional performers,and so on.
however,most japanese people (not only young people but also old people) seldom wear kimono now.
the reasons are follow.
firstly, it is difficult to wear kimono.to wear kimono,you need special skill.(in fact,i cannot wear kimono by myself)if you don't have the skill and want to wear kimono,you have to go to a kimono shop,pay money,and ask to help to wear kimono.
secondly,kimono is too expensive.so,most people have only 1 or 2 kimonos or even no kimono.(i don't have kimono.my mother have 2 kimonos.)
if i want to wear kimono,i have to go to a kimono shop,pay money (expensive!),and borrow kimono.
thirdly,kimono is not suitable for daily life;it is too tight or uneasy to move in kimono;to wash kimono is a troublesome job;to wear kimono needs much time,and so on.
but we wear it in some special situation;graduation ceremony,wedding,ceremony,funeral,and so on.
So,in a sense,i don't think japanese are losing our tradition of wearing kimono.
