Stranger or foreigner have variations: 外国人 (gaikokujin, meaning foreign national) 異邦人 (ihoujin, meaning an alien or non-Japanese) There is also: 外人 (gaijin), but it is a wee bit derogatory. | ||

Hector, Thanks! I need all the blessings I can get. Faith, I choose kanji characters that are broadest in meaning to apply to the widest variety of situations. 知 is wisdom in the respect of being "deep understanding of yourself and the world around you." 智慧 use two characters meaning "knowledge or wisdom" and "preception" and is religious in concept (Buddhism). It is closer in meaning to "enlightenment." The dictionary says the term is translated into English as "prajna." | ||

If your son wants the characters in semicursive (gyousho) or cursive (so-sho) styles, go to http://www013.upp.so-net.ne.jp/santai/santai.htm You can copy and paste each kanji to get to the right kanji in calligraphy style, click and you'll find the character in three styles. Do I have to download in advance any driver to read the webpage you recomended?. It appears in my screen with symbols as when you try to "read" a picture file as a text file. Hector, Sorry I didn't explain enough. I will explain this step-by-step. (The problem stems from the fact that I can't post images.) First, I assume that your PC is Japanese-capable (have East Asian language fonts installed in case of Windows or Japanese language kit in case of Mac, both free and available). Next, you copy (Ctrl+C) one character from this forum. Example: 心 Go to the website I mentioned above. On that website (which is just a list of kanji characters), use Find (Ctrl+F) to find 心. When you find it, you click that character. You get images of the character in three styles -- print, semicursive and cursive styles. You save the image. You get three styles of only one character. You have to cut and select the style you want to use. You repeat this for EACH CHARACTER you want. In case of 心技体, you have do to this three times. Also, stick to one style once you choose a style. If you see the writing style carefully, you can tell the differences. The difference in style is also made clear by the position of each style in the image. Mixing styles is not acceptable in calligraphy. I hope you understand now. | ||

Thanks a lot, Matjlav, but I'm looking (sorry, maybe my post wasn't too clear - my knowledge of Kanji approaches zero... from the left :-) for the ideograms (something you could wear on a crest, or on an armor) representing the concepts. From the length of the phrases, I presume it's not the case. As an example, I've assumed (wrongly, I'm afraid) that 'Mother's Love' could be represented by the characters 'Mama' and 'Ai'. Hello, I hope someone can help me. I am an opera singer who is seeking a tattoo design in kanji. I have found symbols which seem to mean "A song to face the winter night" Basically the symbols for "song" "to face" "winter" "night", four kanji... but I am afraid it is grammatically incorrect, and do not wish to have grammatical errors permanently marked on my body. My second option was "Uta atatameru mafuyu" (A song to warm the midwinter, a series of six kanji), but I prefer the former. The closest I can come to a combination of both is "song" "to guard against" "winter" "night" (uta kei fuyu yoru). Maria, the picture you posted looks like Chinese, not Japanese. Japanese cannot be written entirely in kanji, and the verb always comes at the end of the predicate. Try posting your request in a Chinese forum. | ||

Thank you for the response! I got the symbols from an online Japanese Kanji dictionary search engine, so if they look Chinese, there's definitely something wrong with that search engine! How, in that case, would one write: "A Song To Face The Winter" In Japanese kanji? Thanks again! | ||

Maria: The kanji style looks Japanese, so your search engine is fine, but you can't write Japanese using only kanji (that would be Chinese). You have to use a mixture of kanji and kana (which is the phonetic script).
