what does the word tora mean? |
info
| Posted on Wednesday, December 19, 2001 - 11:15 pm: | |
Usually, "Tora" means "Tiger" in Japanese language but if you refer to Pearl harbor attack, it means, "we launched first torpedoes" (torpedoes attack = RAigeki) in a secret Morse code of the imperial navy. If it began with bomb attack "Toba " should have been sent (bomb attack = BAkugeki). The choice of those 2 weapons was conferred to the local commander due to incertitude before the attack. Kind regards, |

HI, I would like to have some confirmation about a word I read in an Eiji Yoshikawa book ( The perfect light ) it's about the nickname of Sasaki Kojiro wich is Ganryu ( in the book, can't seem to find anything about this for confirmation )... So in the book it says Ganryu means willow. As far as I can see, Ganryu is only the name of the island where the final combat between Kojira and Musashi took place... If someone could please give me some confirmation about the meaning of Ganryu and if it was really the nickname of the legendary Sasaki Kojiro, I would really be pleased. Thank you in advance... Some lost and anonymous dreamer... |

Well, "ganryu" doesn't mean willow, that's 柳, "yanagi." I don't know about sasaki kojiro... |
Matjlav

Wait... 巌柳 Well, that's a name, "Ganryuu", which means "boulder willow", and 岸柳, meaning "beach willow. |

http://www.hikyaku.com/cgi-bin/search?base=histg&word=Sasaki+Kojiro&dir=dico&gif =hisgifg It shows that one of his names was "厳流" which is probably "gan-ryuu", and also "岸柳"..... |

|
info
| Posted on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 - 11:27 pm: | |
There existing no wide usage of printing matters like newspaper at that epoch, people spelt in different ways Sasaki Kojiro's nickname such as 岸柳 巌柳 厳流 but strictly speaking the last one is incorrect because it is his name (or nickname, alias) and not his sword school’s name. You may say 厳流流 for it. |

Hmmm... "Nito ryu." 二等龍 (ni tou ryuu) This means "second class shogi (promoted rook)". どう致しまして! You're welcome! |
info

No, it should be 二刀流 sword's school name which consists to battle with 2 swords (at right and left hands). It was invented by Miyamoto Musashi when he had to fight against 70 persons at the same time. By extension, it designates the person who is good in 2 different domains, such as music and paint, or even the guy who can love simultaneously man and woman.

i also want to know how would i respond when people has invited me to do something with him or her this weekend. for example: (ms. igarashi, a classmate) Ashita, issho no toshokan de benkyo shimasen ka. how do i respond? |
info
| Posted on Thursday, October 16, 2003 - 10:39 pm: | |
Dear Darlene, the Japanese text, "watanabe-san,kin'yoobi ni issho ni hirugohan o tabemasen ka" invites Mr. Watanabe to the lunch while "Okada-san,kin'yoobi ni issho ni eega o mimasen ka" invites Mr. Okada to the movie. For the next question, you have to say "issho ni toshokan" instead of "issho no toshokan". The answer: "Hai shimashyo" ="yes, I will". "Iie damedesu" = "no, I can't" Kind regards, |
