I have some questions about writing japanese vertically. E.g.: (the o's are just used to keep the phrasing aligned) 猫犬 はは 逃猫 げに るジ o ャ o ン o プ o し o た I think that is "The dog jumped to the cat. The cat ran away." 1. Did I write "The dog jumped to the cat" right? If not, clarify. 2. How do you write exclamation points and question marks vertically? 3. Is vertical writing modern, and used usually? 4. Are small kana characters that go with a large kana character put on a different line? ありがとうございます！ Thank you! | ||

猫犬 がが 逃猫 げの た方 へ 跳 ん だ maybe 〜にジャンプする sounds more like "give a jump to"...? i dunno... Also, は sounds more general. Therefore: 犬は猫にジャンプした might sound like "Dogs jumped/gave jumps to cats" and 猫は逃げる might sound like "Cats flee" Hope that makes sense. | ||

Ah, i forgot! Many, many, many magazines (雑誌) and newspapers (新聞) and manga (漫画) are vertical and open from left-to-right. Also, the small kana and punctuation (period and comma) are justified to the upper-right corner of the character's "box". This is different from left-to-right writing because they are justified to the lower-left. | ||

Just a note for those interested: The dog jumped [over] the cat. ------------------------------------------------- 犬が猫[の上]を飛びました inu ga neko [no ue] wo tobimashita. EXPLANATION: You use を with verbs of motion (walk, fly, run, etc.) 文例: 私は貴方のお店の前を歩きました。 watashi ha/wa anata no omise no mae wo arukimashita. "i walked before your store" | ||

か よ ？ ！ You should use 全角 (zenkaku) instead of 半角 (hankaku) if you are going to write vertically so that the question mark and exclamation mark are centered... | ||

are you saying that you must always write か and よ before question marks and exclamation points when vertically writing? | ||

Oh, no, i was just doing that to show that the ？ and ！ are centered... Also, those are probably when you'd be using the two punctuations, right? But, if you're writing formal, you should only use "、" and "。". | ||

to post images you must put them on your hard drive. to post them, just post: (Backslash)image{Description of image, NOT filename, this is what will appear when you hover the arrow over the image} Then, when you preview it, a thing saying "your image here" will appear in place of the code. After you post the image, a page will come up telling you to browse for the image. Do so, and press "upload", and then the image will be posted. Then you can delete it from your hard drive. | ||

yeah, I do! so are you saying no two characters go on the same line? And it shouldn't take that long... Anyway, I was just wondering if イヌがネコのフロントを跳ねた。 would mean "The dog jumped in front of the cat." Thanks! | ||

hmmm~. I think that would work... but probably 跳んだ is better than 跳ねた？ I dunno, it just seems that 跳ねた is like 跳び上がる which is like "jump (upward)"... Whatever(^o^) Instead of front, also, you could say 前を because フロントを might sound like "the cat's reception desk"! haha. | ||

Hehe.... So can you use basically use any noun that could express location to clarify verbs of motion? Or are there only certain nouns that can express it? E.g. イヌがマウンテンの頂上を跳んだ。(Inu ga maunten no choujou o tonda) meaning "The dog jumped on top of the mountain" or イヌがネコの横手を歩いた。(Inu ga neko no yokote o aruita) meaning "The dog walked to the cat's side." "Jumping onto" something is not a "verb of motion"... 空を飛ぶ is "fly through the sky", or, literally "fly the sky". If you want an "to/at" then you need へ or に 犬が山の頂上へ跳んだ "the dog jumped to the summit of the mountain" If you want to express "where" the action was being performed, you need で 犬が山の頂上で跳んだ "the dog jumped [while] on the summit of the mountain" | ||
