Author Message   Matjlav Posted on Sunday, July 13, 2003 - 11:27 am:    how would someone make quotes in Japanese? no, I already know about 「, 」, and ゛, but my question about that is: Is it formal/polite/whatever to use one of those? And my second question is: How would you write something like: "I am a squirrel," said Tom. And my third and final question is, how would you say stuff like: "I am a squirrel!" yelled Tom. or "I am a squirrel," sneered Tom. Are the names ヱイ, ゑい, and ゑい子 still ever given? Thank you.   Mr. Anonymous Posted on Monday, July 21, 2003 - 04:34 am:    um, ゑ/ヱ (e) and ゐ/ヰ (i) are not used anymore. I can't think of any words with を in them off the top of my head, so i'll just say that it's only for the direct object. As for the names, you're free to name your kid anything you want (well, there was a case in the courts where parents tried to name their kid 悪魔 or something!! hahaha!!) pretty much and get away with it. Therefore, if you wanna name your kid ゑい子, feel free! I like the name, personally, but i have never met anyone with it. ------------------------------------------------- USAGE OF ゑ and ゐ: these used to be part of the う verb conjugation. 言わない 言ゐました 言う 言ゑません And, obviously, other words.   Matjlav Posted on Monday, July 21, 2003 - 12:11 pm:    heh, I'm not planning on naming my kid that i'm just curious.
