Hi
I’m teaching myself Japanese and have got to the verb chart which sets out the root form of verbs which can be used to conjugate for different tenses and forms. There are a number of duplicate verbs which I am very confused about. The book usually indicates whether a verb is used for polite or humble form or if it is a different tense. Since the following verbs were all put in the same “root form” section, I just don’t understand the differences. If someone is able to explain to me it would help me out so much. Thanks in advance.
To begin: 始める and 始まる
To bend: 曲げるand 曲がる
To break: 折れるand 折る
To change: 変えるand 変わる
To close: 閉めるand 閉じる
To hide: 隠れるand 隠す
To hit: 当てるand 当たる
To mistake: 間違えるand 間違う
To open: 開ける and 開く
To continue: 続ける and 続く
To move: 動かすand 動く
To stop: 止めるand 止まる
To advance: 進めるand 進む
To float: 浮くand 浮かぶ
Sorry if this is a dumb question. The above are just the duplications I found in my textbook which weren’t explained and it’s really bothering me!
Thanks
Koala

The difference is that these verbs are the intransitive and transitive versions of the same action.
