I'm surprised that many people want to have a tatoo in Japanses. Do you know why not many Japanese have Japanese symbol tatoo? This may offend some people, but I will tell you how Japanese people think about Japanese symbol tatoo, so if you already have Japanese tatoo, you may not want to read. For Japanese, Japanese symbol tatoo is not cool. I don't say all Japanese symbols are not cool, but there are many Japanses symbols which is not cool for tatoo. Even if a word in English is cool for tatoo, the word which is translated to Japanese is not always cool. How Japanese people observe the symbol is not only the meaning of the word, but also the shape of the word. And the only Japanese knows that the shape is cool or not. So if you want to have Japanese symbol as tatoo, you had better ask Japanese friends that the symbol is cool or not. If you are planning to go to Japan someday, you may reconsider to have Japanese tatoo. | ||

2nd post with my name is not my post. Somebody pretend to post as me. Unless I know how to pronounce the name of your chldren, I'm not sure how to write your children's name in Japanese. You had better find Japanese people in real to ask. And you had better know that sometime people in this site make wrong translation. For example, under the "Symbols bis" somebody transrate (kate → ケト). This is not right and sound very strenge.... I'm not trying to bother people, just telling truth. | ||

i want to get the word FAITH in japanese....would that be offensive? i don't plan on ever going to japan..... or anyone seeing my tatoo.......what's your input? | ||

To be honest, Kai, I agree with what you said, and I can't understand someone wanting to have a tattoo in Japanese unless they either *are* Japanese, or they are planning to go and live there someday... or if they are incredibly, incredibly crazy about Japan. It seems a lot of people just want a kanji for fashion and I really don't see the point of that! If you are so keen on Japan as to want kanji tattoo, I think it's better to go and live there, then you can see what tattoos Japanese people like. My bf is Japanese and one day we might live there... I am learning the language but I wouldn't want to get a kanji tattoo because I'm not Japanese myself and I think it's kind of shallow and not respectful. (Of course, that could be different if you live there for a long time and know kanji well...) None of my business really, anyway... no offence meant to anyone with a tattoo :-) | ||

Yes, they are soooooo weird to us. ones in Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana... but i kinda like to see them for fun  when you see words on T-shirts in japan, you might feel the same!?? they are so wrong :-) | ||

Yes, there are some really funny English things written in Japan! In fact I have never been to Japan - maybe in the future... - so perhaps I'm not fair to comment... but I see some things that people post on the web and it makes me laugh. Not to make fun of people's English, though, because I'm sure it's a damn sight better than my beginner's Japanese, lol :-) One of my favourite was 'CATS KNOW VARIOUS THINGS' (!!) - it's not wrong English but it sounds kinda like a conspiracy theory or something! And it's funny to me because my boyfriend has 5 cats. I'm sure they know something I don't... ;-) But I'm sorry because I'm off topic now! I expect the Kanji tattoos can seem, erm, somewhat strange to a Japanese person, lol. I really do question some (mainly Western) people's insanity over all things Japanese! | ||

if you really want tattos in japanese, the best way to do is to have japanese people and ask how they think about it. plus, get some nice Kanji! the shape(style) of the word. meaning also. i see many funny translations in this site.... literal translation can be strange to us. i made names in Kanji with "ateji"(a japanese character used as phonetic symbol rather than for its meaning) for my friends before. not for tatoos though. it was pretty cool is this the site you can get one?? http://www2.japanese-name-translation.com/jntshop/kanji_shop.html i think that just one(or a few) kanji would be nice for tatoos. or maybe some kind of a design of Japanese style?? anyways, i dont know really... if you like it, then its all good!? :-) | ||

Miki, your post made me laugh! I like number 5 (but I think I know the answer, hehe!). Yeah, I don't there is anything wrong with having kanji tattoo providing you get an opinion of Japanese person on whether the kanji is 'right' for what you want to say! | ||

i dont really understand why you guys think japanese writings are tattoos are wired,...i think people just like how it looks considering the artistic brush strokes and whatnots,...also considering that usually it is the person who got the tattoo who will know what it symbol means. as oppose to it being in, lets say english, everyone will know what it says kinda defeats the story behiind their tattoo,.... im not saying you guys are wrong im just saying that just because you dont live in japan, know japanese, or are japanaese doesnt mean people cant enjoy or be a fan of japanese history =) | ||

I am Japanese-American i think its only cool to get a tatoo in with Japanese Characters if you are getting one because you truly understand the meaning of the symbol not to mention you are doing it for the right reason (like not because it looks neat)... |
