You can choose either left to right or up to down. Foreign names do not have any meaning in Japanese. I think what you have in mind is the application of kanji characters on foreign names, which is not conventional but many people find it "cool." Meaning emerges from the choice of kanji characters to match the phonetic representation of the foreign name. This is "design" or "invention" of a name and not standard Japanese. If you like to do that, I must warn you that the kanji presentation of a foreign name can turn out tacky and even absurd in some cases. You need to consult an educated native Japanese speaker if you want that. | ||
