Hello nere, Kanji are characters that were borrowed from the Chinese, when the Japanese language did not have a writing system. They are symbols that represent ideas, or ideograms. Hiragana are characters that were created in Japan, based on the Chinese characters, to show the Japanese language phonetically. They are phonetic symbols. Katakana are similar to hiragana. The difference is that the style of writing is based only on linear strokes. They are phonetic symbols used when writing foreign names. Because kanji did not fully represent the Japanese spoken language, they are used in combination with hiragana & katakana.
