I once had a teacher who taught me a phrase that he said meant "Like the Willow", based on the principal that a willow will bend but not break. It was something like "Yagi no edi", the "e" and "i" having long vowel sounds phonetically. I would greatly appreciate help with this phrase, the actual english translation, and the kanji and hiragana writing of it. Thank you very much. chris | ||

The saying is "yanagi no eda ni yuki ore nashi." (柳の枝に雪折れなし。） The literal translation is "the willow branch does not break under the weight of snow," meaning that there is strength in yielding like the willow (elasticity/versatility is stronger than brute strength). |
