Again I'm stuck in translation . Can you please help? The problem is in this 2 sentences: それは細く立ち上がる陽炎のようでもあり。あるいは闇に沈む氷塊の、どんよりとした潤 みのようでもあった。 This is the thin rising heat haze... Or there is a block of ice, sinking in the darkness, dim and opaque... ようでもあり/ようでもあった - I can't figure out how to translate it でも means but, however, but probably it's some kind of set phrase? Sorry, i just can't clear it out myself.. |

...のよう suggests "appearance of" ...のようでもあり、...のようでもあった It appeared to be... or ..... The writer is trying to be poetic, using contrasting imagery. My try (although it is not a good one) It appeared to be haze rising faintly into the air -- or the dull, dark wetness of an iceberg sinking into the gloom. (Please note I have deviated from faithful translation, but you should get the idea. Express the sentence in your own words.)
