In kanji, hiragana and katakana characters Love: (ai) 愛 − あい − アイ Hope: (kibou) 希望 − きぼう ー キボウ Truth: (shinjitsu) 真実 − しんじつ − シンジツ Respect: (sonkei) 尊敬 − そんけい − ソンケイ Courage: (yu-u-ki) 勇気 − ゆうき ー ユウキ To post Japanese symbols, I think there are two alternatives: Paste them as images. Or install East Asian language fonts (assuming that you are using Windows). If you use XP, the fonts are in your Windows CD. For older systems, you most probably can get information on the Microsoft website. | ||

OK, its just i have i have come across another one, e.g romaji. Also acording to this site (http://www.takase.com/MartialArts/Bushido/Bushido.htm) the character for respect is totally different. Can you explain this (sorry to ask so many questions :P) And it goes on to explain different different styles of writing the characters, is this correct? Or are these different character sets as well (Gyousho, Hentai-kana, etc) http://www.takase.com/Library/Glossary.htm#KAISHO I am just a little confused as i have seen a few different characters (consisting on just one character) for writing love as well (again on the same site). Okay, I must repeat myself again...not to you, but to every newcomer... Don't expect to find the exact equivalent for most English terms in Japanese or any other foreign language. The word "respect" is a case in point. It can be interpreted in many ways -- respect for elders, respect as in demonstration of courtesy, respect suggesting admiration, etc. Therefore, there are many variations. "Sonkei" is the most common equivalent for "respect" in English and has the broadest meaning. That is why it was chosen as translation here. The kanji in the website is "rei," as in show of respect in manners, courtesy, protocol, etc. It points to the ceremonial movements and traditions of martial arts, tea ceremony, etc. When you mean character sets, there are only three, as I said before. The ones you see are forms of calligraphy. They are all kanji characters written in various styles. If you are old enough to know English penmanship, you should understand. They are handwriting styles and are forms of art. Calligraphy is an art practiced as form of meditation and character-building (your character as human, not characters in writing). Thanks for clearing that up! So basically it depends on the context which character you use. If it is possible, how many different symbols can be used to mean respect & hope (context is irrelvant), and if possible what are they? One last question, with the different forms of calligraphy, some of the characters written almost look totally different (as seen here http://www.takase.com/PersonalDesignProcess.htm), but are identical in meaning, why is that and isnt it hard to read/interperate? Thanks again for everything, it has cleared _ALOT_ up for me and given me a greater understanding! | ||

What you are asking for is the Japanese version of the Roget's Thesaurus -- the extent goes beyond my knowledge of the language and into the area of creative imagination. The list is endless. I must get paid for such a job ;) Calligraphy is based on an extensive understanding of the written Japanese language. There is strict discipline in sequence, length, etc., of the strokes in writing each kanji. For the trained eye, it is easy to understand "most" characters written. There are some that is so-o-o abbreviated that it must be explained even to the Japanese. It is very much like the way you can figure out sloppy handwriting of a friend. | ||

Not exactly Roget's, but there are dictionaries -- but Japanese only. As far as I know, the kanji characters you want are in the realm of more advanced Japanese. Free websites offer elementary Japanese only. Try a library in your area - but you need to be competent in Japanese, unless some good soul has written a guide for English speakers. By the way, the two kanji characters used for "sonkei" both symbolize "respect." | ||

Is it possible for me to receive corrections to this statement? Preferrably in Romanji. Watashi wa kare ga hazure. It is my understanding that the word, hazure is incorrect, but I can not find a romanji translation (due to my ineptitude most likely) for the term "I miss him". Alex, "Hazure" means "to miss" as in hit-and-miss. "I miss him" cannot be translated as is. The most appropriate would be: 彼が居なくて淋しい。(Kare ga inakute sabishii: I'm lonely because he's not here.) Anonymous: Kary is ケアリー or ケリー Slut is ばいた (sorry, don't know the word in kanji--don't remember seeing it put down in writing.) | ||
