A curiosity arises for me: The Japanese as a whole: Can all read Kanji? I know that in most places where Kanji is written, there is in small character above it, a pronounciation guide in the 'kana' ( Hiragana or katakana). I believe this to be called 'furigana' Is there an illiteracy regarding the Kanji and the common people? |

NO they are not illiterate. However with over 3,000 total not everyone can read them all. Sometimes it is done for children up to middle school level, as they have not learned these kanji yet. Or a kanji that can have 2 or more readings and so on.... |
