How do you use it? what does it mean? here are a few words i saw that have that symbol: fufufu(and then that symbol)and then ! ku(and then that symbol) yuke(and then that symbol)and then ! thanks in advance |

Hello. My two sisters and I are getting a tatoo of 'sisters' in Japanese. We want only one symbol, so it could be in a small, inconspicuous place. I looked at what the sisters symbol is in a previous post, but it had two parts. If anyone knows of one all three of us could get, or a different one that meant older, middle, and younger, that would be great. Thank you. -Julie |

| Posted on Monday, July 28, 2003 - 05:03 pm: | |
Sisters in Japanese: The left symbol means older sister, and the right means younger. There is no symbol for middle sister, and no one symbol term that all of you could get. Two symbols is all. Well, you could put the older sister symbol on the oldest, and younger on the youngest, but the middle... sorry... 生憎なヘルプできる。 Sorry, but I can't help you. |
Mr. Anonymous
| Posted on Monday, July 28, 2003 - 07:57 pm: | |
your image here, again(^yeah^) i'm not the only one!! In japan, nobody is "equal", per say, and it is always thought of as "above or below". This is probably the reason for not having a "middle sister" because you would say 1st daughter, 2nd daughter, 3rd daughter. And, they would say, "my two older sisters", "my older sister, and younger sister", "my two younger sisters". That make sense? |

生憎なヘルプできない。 That's what "Sorry, but I can't help you" should have been... The other one said "Sorry, but I can help you." Oops. |

I've seen "Life" translated as: 生命 and like what Matjlav posted above, which is right? |
Mr. Anonymous
| Posted on Sunday, September 14, 2003 - 06:17 pm: | |
生命 is like "life" in general. or, "existence". or, it can mean something like "the life" or "the soul" when refering to something like "the most important thing"... 人命 is like "human life". |
Colin Fox
| Posted on Sunday, September 14, 2003 - 07:31 pm: | |
ahhhh, thank you. So in the context the most important thing is life I would use the kanji: 生命 correct? on another note, anybody know the symbol for immortality? |
Mr. Anonymous
| Posted on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 07:22 am: | |
NO. 生命 is like 精髄 (essence/kernel/spirit/pith) or just life/existence in general: 彼の政治生命もこれで終わりだ - His political life is over. 日本の作家は概して作家としての生命が短い - Japanese writers are, in general, short-lived as such. |
Colin Fox
